# Ahrefs is making a Google-derived AI demand estimate the default in Brand Radar

Ahrefs Brand Radar is replacing plain Google keyword volume with a platform-specific “AI adjusted volume” estimate built from Google search volume and Ahrefs’ observed AI-to-Google referral ratios, changing how prompt volume, impressions and AI Share of Voice are weighted from August 31.

Ahrefs is standardising Brand Radar on an estimated AI-demand metric because major AI platforms do not publish prompt volume. The new number can improve relative weighting between prompts and platforms, but it remains a modelled proxy rather than a count of how many people actually asked an AI system a question.

## What changed

Ahrefs has changed the volume model behind Brand Radar’s AI visibility reports. Its new “AI adjusted volume” starts with the Google search volume of a prompt’s parent keyword, then applies a platform-specific ratio based on Ahrefs’ aggregated website traffic from that AI platform relative to Google organic traffic. Brand Radar switched its AI visibility reports to this metric in July, affecting reported Volume and Impressions and potentially AI Share of Voice. Users can temporarily compare the old plain-Google-volume calculation, but Ahrefs says that option and the API’s `search_volume_type` choice disappear on August 31, 2026, after which AI adjusted volume becomes the only calculation.

## Why it matters

AI-search tools increasingly present numbers that look like conventional search demand even though ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and other platforms do not publish query-volume datasets comparable to Google Keyword Planner or clickstream-derived search tools. Ahrefs is making its modelling assumption explicit and then embedding it into visibility and Share of Voice reporting. Builders, publishers and marketers using Brand Radar therefore need to interpret changes in weighted impressions or AI Share of Voice partly as changes in the measurement model, not automatically as changes in real AI-user demand. The metric is useful for relative prioritisation, but it is not an observed count of prompts or people.

## The estimate begins with Google demand

For each tracked AI prompt, Ahrefs identifies a parent keyword and retrieves that keyword’s Google search volume. It then scales that number with a platform-specific adjustment factor. The resulting figure is intended to approximate demand for an equivalent topic on each AI surface rather than reusing the same Google volume unchanged across every chatbot.

## The platform ratio comes from referral traffic, not prompt logs

Ahrefs derives its adjustment ratios from aggregated website traffic attributed to individual AI platforms relative to organic traffic from Google. That gives the company an empirical signal about the relative scale of AI-platform traffic, but it is still an indirect bridge from referrals to prompt demand. AI products can differ materially in how often a query produces an external click, so the ratio should not be read as a direct measurement of total platform usage.

## The change affects more than the Volume column

Ahrefs’ changelog says AI adjusted volume affects Volume and Impressions across Brand Radar AI visibility reports and may change AI Share of Voice. A site can therefore see historical or comparative metrics move because prompt weights changed even if the underlying set of AI responses or mentions did not. Teams maintaining dashboards should annotate the methodology change rather than treating the series as perfectly continuous.

## August 31 removes the old comparison path

Brand Radar currently allows users to switch back to plain Google keyword volume for comparison. Ahrefs’ API likewise exposes `search_volume_type`, with the adjusted calculation already the default. Ahrefs says the parameter will be deprecated on August 31 and all requests will then use AI adjusted volume, making the new methodology the standard across UI and API reporting.

## Use the number as a prioritisation weight, not a census

The practical value is relative: a modelled demand weight can help rank prompts, compare topic groups and make Share of Voice less dependent on treating every prompt as equally important. It should not be used as if Ahrefs had access to platform query logs. Decisions that need actual exposure, visits or revenue still require first-party citation/visibility data where available, referral analytics and downstream conversion measurement.

## Key details

- Ahrefs’ AI adjusted volume is a platform-specific estimate derived from Google search volume rather than observed AI prompt counts.
- Each prompt is mapped to a parent Google keyword, whose search volume is multiplied by a platform-specific adjustment ratio.
- The ratio is derived from Ahrefs’ aggregated website traffic from each AI platform relative to Google organic traffic.
- Brand Radar began using AI adjusted volume in AI visibility reports in July 2026.
- The change affects Volume and Impressions and can also alter AI Share of Voice calculations.
- Plain Google search volume remains available as a temporary comparison only until August 31, 2026.
- Brand Radar API endpoints currently expose `search_volume_type`, but Ahrefs says the parameter is deprecated on August 31 and all requests will use AI adjusted volume.

## Builder takeaways

- Annotate August 2026 Brand Radar reporting so stakeholders know that movements in weighted impressions or Share of Voice may partly reflect a methodology change.
- Do not describe AI adjusted volume as actual ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity prompt counts; call it an Ahrefs estimate or proxy.
- If you need before-and-after continuity, export both old and adjusted calculations before August 31 while the comparison is still available.
- Use the adjusted number to prioritise prompt/topic research, then validate business value with first-party AI visibility data, referrals and conversions where possible.
- When comparing AI platforms, remember that the adjustment is partly based on referral behavior; platforms with different click-out rates may not map cleanly from referral share to total prompt share.
- Update API pipelines that rely on `search_volume_type` because Ahrefs says the parameter will stop providing an alternate calculation after August 31.

## What to watch

- Whether Ahrefs publishes the platform-specific ratios, update cadence or confidence intervals behind AI adjusted volume.
- Whether independent datasets validate the relationship between AI referral share and underlying prompt/query volume.
- How often historical Brand Radar metrics are recalculated when Ahrefs updates platform ratios.
- Whether AI platforms begin exposing first-party query-volume or impression data that reduces the need for modelled demand proxies.
- Whether other GEO/AI-search analytics vendors converge on similar adjustment methods or materially different demand models.

## Uncertainties

- The underlying AI platforms do not provide Ahrefs with comprehensive prompt-volume logs, so the metric is necessarily modelled rather than directly observed.
- Referral traffic may not scale proportionally with prompt volume because different AI products and answer types have different external-click behavior.
- Ahrefs’ public explanation describes the method but does not provide enough information to independently reproduce every platform-specific ratio.
- Changes to the adjustment ratios can alter reported weighted visibility even when a brand’s underlying appearances do not change.
