# Google Merchant API exposes AI Mode and Gemini checkout funnels — with an alpha reporting trap

Google's October Merchant API update adds experimental Universal Commerce Protocol reports for buy-button clicks, account linking, cart transfers, purchases and cancellations across Search AI Mode and Gemini. A currency-grouping trap can make mixed metrics misleading, and access remains v1alpha.

Retailers and commerce-tool developers can now query first-party UCP shopping funnels rather than infer agentic checkout performance from traffic alone, but the alpha API needs careful query design.

## What changed

Google's October 2026 Merchant Reports API release makes two Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) performance views queryable through v1alpha accounts.reports.search. The account-level ucp_agentic_performance_view reports buy-button clicks, account linking, purchase counts and values, cancellations and cart transfers, while ucp_agentic_product_performance_view exposes product-level buy-button clicks by offer ID. Reports cover Google surfaces including Search AI Mode and Gemini, support standalone and multi-client merchant accounts, and require a date filter. Google warns that mixing currency-denominated Price metrics with currency-independent counts in one query can split or omit rows, so merchants should run separate count and value queries. The feature is alpha, subject to change, and does not itself expand merchant eligibility or guarantee UCP orders.

## Why it matters

Agentic commerce moves parts of product discovery and purchase decisions inside search and assistant interfaces, where conventional site analytics can miss upstream intent. First-party reporting of buy-button, account-linking, cart and purchase stages gives retailers and commerce SaaS teams a way to diagnose funnel drop-off and evaluate integrations. But misgrouping money and count metrics can create incorrect totals, and the alpha API is not a mature cross-platform attribution standard. This is a distinct reporting capability, not the Shopify Global Catalog UCP migration or Google's existing warranty-feed expansion.

## Two new UCP reporting views

UcpAgenticPerformanceView aggregates buy-button clicks, account links, purchases, cancellations, cart transfers and value metrics by date, merchant account and customer country. UcpAgenticProductPerformanceView exposes product-level buy-button clicks by offer_id, date and country. Queries use Merchant Center Query Language through the v1alpha accounts.reports.search endpoint, and date must be included in WHERE.

## The currency aggregation trap

Google warns that combining Price fields such as purchase_value or average_order_value with currency-independent counts such as buy_button_clicks can split results by currency and omit count-only rows. Query count/funnel metrics separately from monetary metrics, and aggregate value metrics by currency. The published sample is illustrative, not a performance benchmark.

## Who can query and what remains alpha

Both standalone leaf accounts and advanced multi-client accounts are supported, contrary to the assumption that only aggregators qualify. This is explicitly experimental v1alpha functionality and may change. The API reports UCP activity across Google surfaces including AI Mode and Gemini; it does not promise full user-level attribution or comparable data from other assistants.

## A new measurement surface, not a new distribution guarantee

Google launched Universal Cart in US Search and Gemini earlier in October, already covered in BTN's dossier #471. The new API adds a developer-accessible measurement layer for participating merchants. Existing Google Search Console generative-AI reporting measures content discovery rather than UCP purchase funnels; they are not interchangeable.

## Key details

- October 2026 Merchant API release; UCP reports available during week of October 19.
- Uses v1alpha accounts.reports.search and Merchant Center Query Language.
- Account-level ucp_agentic_performance_view covers clicks, linking, cart transfers, purchases, cancellations and values.
- Product-level ucp_agentic_product_performance_view covers offer_id buy-button clicks.
- Both leaf/standalone and advanced merchant accounts supported.
- A date WHERE filter is required for both views.
- Mixing Price metrics with currency-independent counts can split or omit rows.
- Alpha status; no evidence of general availability, cross-assistant parity or conversion uplift.

## Builder takeaways

- Check eligibility and test v1alpha reporting with a bounded date range.
- Run separate count/funnel and monetary queries to avoid currency aggregation errors.
- Segment by date, country and offer_id to investigate funnel performance.
- Do not equate UCP buy-button clicks with completed sales or compare blindly to website analytics.
- Treat API schemas as experimental and plan for change.

## What to watch

- Promotion of UCP reporting from alpha and stable schema/quotas.
- Coverage expansion beyond current Google surfaces and merchant accounts.
- Evidence of actual merchant adoption and reliable attribution comparisons.
- Reporting differences between cart transfers and completed orders.

## Uncertainties

- No independent adoption or conversion-impact measurement available.
- Alpha fields and availability may change.
- Google has not established comparable funnel metrics for competing assistant ecosystems.
