# Google makes Spanner Omni production-ready outside its cloud — with a new licensing boundary

Spanner Omni is now generally available for Kubernetes and VM deployments on-premises and in other clouds, with backup, governance and commercial support. Its free Developer Edition is non-production only and has a 90-day licence for most configurations, while commercial use requires paid vCPU-based licensing.

Google's distributed SQL database can now run in production beyond Google Cloud, but 'deploy anywhere' doesn't mean free or fully managed. Spanner Omni GA brings security, backup and paid commercial licensing, with important limits on its developer edition.

## What changed

On September 30, 2026, Google declared Spanner Omni generally available as a self-managed version of Spanner for on-premises infrastructure, Kubernetes and virtual machines on other clouds, and local development. The GA edition adds production security and governance, backup/restore, dedicated worker nodes and commercial support. Google now distinguishes a free non-commercial, non-production Developer Edition from a paid, annual vCPU-based Commercial Edition. The Developer Edition normally has a 90-day license; single-server deployments of four vCPUs or fewer have a non-expiring license and include backup/restore. Google says it has seen more than two million downloads since preview, a vendor-reported figure rather than independently audited adoption.

## Why it matters

For teams that need strong consistency and a multi-model database without putting every workload in Google Cloud, Spanner Omni changes the deployment choice from a cloud-only managed service to software they can run themselves. The practical decision is not simply whether the SQL API works elsewhere: operators must account for licensing, cluster maintenance, backups, high availability and support. The free edition can be useful for development, but it cannot be assumed to cover commercial production, and there is no managed-service availability SLA for customer-run installations.

## What is actually portable

Google describes Spanner Omni as supporting distributed SQL, strong consistency and ACID transactions alongside graph, key-value, full-text and vector capabilities. It runs on customer-managed VMs and Kubernetes across private infrastructure and other public clouds, allowing development and testing locally. The platform supports MCP Toolbox integration for agent-accessible schemas and queries, but that does not replace normal database permissions or deployment review.

## GA fills production gaps from preview

The general-availability release adds TLS, authentication, authorization and audit logging, plus backup and restore and stateless worker nodes that offload background work from database servers. Commercial customers can obtain direct Google Cloud Customer Care support. These are operational features that determine whether an organization can run a database outside a lab.

## The free edition is not a free production licence

Developer Edition is intended for non-commercial, non-production use. Its licence generally lasts 90 days, except a single-server configuration with four vCPUs or fewer can use a non-expiring licence and includes backup/restore. Larger or longer-lived development setups can request a perpetual developer licence. Commercial Edition is a paid annual subscription priced by vCPU, and public list pricing is not stated in the announcement; customers are directed to sales.

## Self-managed changes the reliability contract

Unlike managed Spanner, Spanner Omni does not carry a Google-provided availability SLA for customer-run installations. Users operate upgrades, monitoring, capacity and incident response themselves. Some integrations tied to Google Cloud services, including BigQuery, Knowledge Catalog and Gemini Enterprise, are excluded. Google also acknowledges feature gaps versus fully managed Spanner and a roadmap to close them.

## The portability claim has useful limits

Attio describes using Spanner Omni alongside managed Spanner, but its testimonial and Google's two-million-download figure are vendor-provided adoption evidence, not a comparative performance benchmark. Teams should test operational parity, network behavior, disaster recovery and commercial terms in their own environments before making a migration decision.

## Key details

- General availability announced September 30, 2026; runs on VMs, Kubernetes, on-premises and other public clouds.
- GA adds TLS, authentication, authorization, audit logs, backup/restore, worker nodes and commercial support.
- Free Developer Edition is for non-commercial, non-production use, generally with a 90-day licence.
- Single-server Developer Edition at four vCPUs or fewer has a non-expiring licence and includes backup/restore.
- Commercial Edition uses paid annual vCPU-based licensing; no public price figure in the announcement.
- Customer-managed Spanner Omni has no Google availability SLA and omits some managed Google Cloud integrations.
- Google reports over two million preview downloads; the figure is not independently audited.

## Builder takeaways

- Verify whether a proposed workload requires a commercial licence before deploying Spanner Omni in production.
- Test backups, restores, node failures, schema migrations and upgrade procedures rather than assuming managed Spanner operations carry over.
- Account for vCPU subscription fees, infrastructure costs and staff time when comparing against managed Spanner or other distributed SQL databases.
- Use the small free developer configuration to evaluate compatibility, but do not treat it as a production entitlement.
- Audit which Google Cloud integrations and Spanner features your application relies on before claiming full portability.

## What to watch

- Published commercial pricing or independently verified total-cost comparisons.
- Closure of remaining feature gaps with fully managed Spanner.
- Independent tests of consistency, throughput and operations across different clouds.
- Whether free Developer Edition licensing terms change as adoption grows.

## Uncertainties

- Google's download count and customer examples are vendor-reported.
- Public pricing for Commercial Edition is not specified in the announcement.
- Feature parity with managed Spanner is incomplete and may vary by release.
- Real-world operational costs and reliability depend on customer deployment design.
