Key details

  1. Documented October 29–30, 2026; availability depends on eligible cohort and country.
  2. Pro 100, 200 and 500: $100, $200 and $500 API credits per monthly billing cycle.
  3. Business Standard: $20 per paid seat; Premium: $100; pooled maximum $500 monthly.
  4. Annually prepaid Business: up to $6,000 for the annual billing cycle.
  5. Eligible subscription must be paid and active at least seven days; owner activation required.
  6. First grants are prorated; unused monthly credits expire without rollover.
  7. One eligible subscription/workspace links to one owned API organisation.
  8. Plus, Go, Free, Enterprise and Edu not established as eligible under current offer.
  9. Credits fund API Platform usage, but not Codex usage through API keys or ChatGPT usage limits.
  10. Existing purchased credits or auto recharge may incur charges after promotional grants run out.

What builders should take away

  1. If already on an eligible plan, check ChatGPT Settings → Billing or workspace billing and claim the API grant rather than assuming it activates automatically.
  2. Confirm which API organisation receives the grant, and check its expiration and current credit balance before running a demo or production agent.
  3. Budget against the actual prorated grant and model-specific API rates, not the full-period headline figure.
  4. Keep API spending controls and rate limits in place; promotional grants are consumed before purchased credits.
  5. Do not plan to fund Codex API-key sessions or signed-in ChatGPT usage from this grant.
  6. For Business, model the $500 pooled cap before adding seats solely to increase API credit allowances.

What changed

OpenAI has introduced an API credit benefit for eligible ChatGPT Pro and Business subscriptions, documented on October 29–30, 2026. Eligible Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500 subscriptions can claim $100, $200 and $500 respectively per monthly billing period. Eligible ChatGPT Business Standard seats contribute $20 and Premium seats $100 each to a pooled workspace allowance capped at $500 per month; annual prepaid Business workspaces receive a grant capped at $6,000 for their annual billing cycle. Activation requires a qualifying paid subscription active at least seven days, an eligible account/workspace owner and an API organisation owned by the claimant. Plus, Go, Free, Enterprise and Edu are not eligible under the documented offer. Credits fund API usage in one linked organisation, not ChatGPT subscriptions, and are not cash refunds.

Why it matters

For small software teams already paying for qualifying ChatGPT subscriptions, API usage for prototypes, public demos and lightweight agents can be funded by a benefit that previously was not included. That changes marginal experimentation costs, not the underlying published API prices. Founders must avoid treating the nominal allowance as cash or a permanent, transferable subsidy: grants are prorated when claimed mid-cycle, expire, cannot be rolled over and are constrained by API rate and model limits. The benefit does not pay for Codex usage authenticated with API keys. Business seat mixes, owner permissions and the $500 cap make the effective value different from simply multiplying all seats by their monthly price.

Who qualifies and how much

Pro 100/200/500 plans receive monthly $100/$200/$500 API allowances. Business Standard contributes $20 per paid seat and Business Premium $100, pooled to a maximum of $500 per monthly billing cycle. For example, five Standard and three Premium seats yield $400 per month, whereas ten Standard plus four Premium seats would hit the $500 cap. Annual upfront Business workspaces receive up to $6,000 per annual cycle rather than monthly grants. Eligibility requires a paid subscription active for at least seven days and availability in the relevant cohort and country; an eligible subscription alone does not prove a grant has been issued.

Activation, ownership and expiration

The Pro subscription owner or Business workspace owner must link an API organisation they own, using the matching account email and appropriate billing permissions. One eligible subscription/workspace links to one API organisation, and each API organisation can have one active subscription link. First grants are prorated for the remaining paid term. Monthly unused credits expire at the end of that billing cycle, with no rollover; annual prepaid grants expire at annual cycle end. Later eligible renewals grant credits automatically while the benefit remains available, which OpenAI says may change or be removed.

What the credits actually cover

The credits apply to paid API Platform usage billed to the linked organisation, including Responses, Chat Completions, Agents, Decisions, Realtime/Live, Images and applicable built-in tool or storage charges. They are used before purchased API credits. They do not increase ChatGPT or signed-in Codex limits and explicitly do not cover Codex usage authenticated with API keys. ChatGPT Business membership does not automatically grant API project access. Credit balances do not remove request, token, model or project rate limits.

Cost controls and practical traps

Owners should check the actual grant amount, expiration and API organisation before running production workloads. When promotional credits run out, existing purchased credits may be consumed; if none remain, requests fail with credit_balance_exhausted unless an owner purchases credits or enables auto recharge. A linked organisation's usage dashboard can show costs before grants are applied, so billed usage and cash charged are not identical. Downgrading to an ineligible plan ends future benefits at the billing-cycle boundary. The grant is not a universal API discount or a guarantee of zero bills.

What to watch next

  • Whether eligible countries, cohorts or additional subscription plans expand.
  • Changes to the $500 monthly Business cap and annual prepaid grant rules.
  • Whether Codex API-key usage remains excluded.
  • Whether renewal, expiration or owner-relinking rules change and how the benefit behaves when plans change.

Still unclear

  • The public documentation does not establish universal country/cohort availability; users must verify the offer appears in their account.
  • The value realised depends on eligible paid usage during each cycle; unused grants have no cash value.
  • The benefit may change or be withdrawn, and does not alter published per-token API prices.
  • There is no evidence that these grants increase API rate limits beyond ordinary organisation eligibility.
