Reddit’s tracked share of ChatGPT Search citations fell 86% in mid-August

Promptwatch published data on August 18 showing Reddit’s share of citations in tracked ChatGPT Search responses at an average 3.83% from July 18 through August 7, then 0.52% during August 14–17 — an 86.4% relative decline. Promptwatch’s follow-up notes that ChatGPT’s use of `site:` operators in search-query fan-out rose sharply around August 8, but the company explicitly says the timing does not prove that change caused Reddit’s citation decline. Its comparison data for Google AI surfaces showed a much smaller, gradual Reddit decline rather than the same cliff. The measurement covers visible citations in Promptwatch’s sample of responses that contained at least one citation; it does not measure every source ChatGPT may retrieve or read in the background.

Marketers and publishers have increasingly treated Reddit visibility as a route into AI answers because community discussions can be useful grounding material. A sudden change in visible citation share demonstrates how brittle that tactic can be when the answer engine’s retrieval, fan-out or citation-selection behavior changes. The practical response is not to abandon Reddit based on one tracker. It is to separate source usage from visible citation, diversify where authoritative information exists, and measure AI visibility by engine and outcome rather than assuming a channel that worked last month will keep the same weight.

Promptwatch calculates the share of cited ChatGPT Search responses in its dataset that include a Reddit URL. Its reported baseline was 3.83% from July 18 through August 7, falling to 0.52% for August 14–17. That is an 86.4% relative decline in the tracker’s visible-citation measure. Responses without citations do not contribute to the denominator, and the dataset does not expose everything ChatGPT may have searched or read before composing an answer.

Promptwatch separately observed a jump around August 8 in ChatGPT search queries using `site:` restrictions, from roughly 0.4% to nearly 17%. The tracker proposes that more deliberate source targeting could change which domains become visible citations, but there is a timing gap before Reddit’s steepest decline and no OpenAI statement tying the two together. A collection or classification artifact also cannot be ruled out from the public data alone.

Promptwatch says Reddit’s citation share in Google AI surfaces declined from about 2.37% to 2.10%, an 11.3% relative change, over a similar period. That much smaller movement suggests the ChatGPT pattern is not simply evidence that Reddit content disappeared from the web or became broadly unusable to AI systems. It is more consistent with an engine-specific measurement or retrieval/citation-selection change, while still leaving the exact mechanism unknown.

Subsequent reporting noted that ChatGPT can still appear to access Reddit during research even when fewer Reddit URLs are surfaced as final citations. For GEO measurement, that distinction matters: a source can influence an answer without receiving a visible link. Teams should therefore avoid equating citation share with total model dependence or direct referral opportunity.

A site or brand that optimized primarily for being mentioned on Reddit would have little control over an answer engine changing how it selects citations. Stronger distribution comes from making useful, verifiable information available across first-party pages, specialist sources, community discussions and structured product or documentation surfaces, then tracking which engines actually cite and send qualified traffic.
