Updated 8 Sep 2026: Post-rollout data now quantifies the measurement break YouTube created on August 24. Agentio says that across more than 75,000 videos it measured 549M public views but 330M Engaged views — roughly 60% of the public total — with the gap varying materially by channel size, content category and traffic surface.

Key details

  1. The first-frame public-view definition took effect globally on August 24, 2026.
  2. The prior definition remains available in YouTube Analytics as `Engaged views`.
  3. Agentio says its post-cutover sample includes more than 75,000 videos, 549M public views and 330M Engaged views.
  4. About 60% of public views were Engaged views across that sample, equivalent to roughly a 1.67x public-to-engaged ratio.
  5. Agentio reports larger public/engaged gaps for smaller channels than for channels above 300,000 public views.
  6. Technology content recorded about a 46% engaged-view share in Agentio’s sample.
  7. Feed surfaces generated a disproportionate share of the public-versus-engaged gap.
  8. YouTube says earnings and YPP eligibility are not changed by the public-view counting update.

What builders should take away

  1. Annotate August 24 in every dashboard that compares YouTube public views over time.
  2. Use Engaged views rather than headline public views when you need continuity with the older measurement definition.
  3. Do not apply a generic 1.67x correction factor to every channel; the early data shows the gap varies materially by channel scale, category and traffic surface.
  4. Recalculate view-based conversion rates, sponsorship CPMs and internal benchmarks using both public and Engaged views for periods spanning the cutover.
  5. For paid creator campaigns, specify which view definition is used in reporting and pricing so the August metric change does not silently alter the effective cost per meaningful view.
  6. Keep public views, Engaged views and monetization-qualified views as distinct fields in analytics pipelines.

What changed

Since August 24, 2026, YouTube has counted a public view from the first frame of playback across Shorts, long-form, podcasts and live video while preserving the older-style definition as `Engaged views` in Analytics. New post-rollout measurement now shows how large that discontinuity can be. Agentio says its analysis of more than 75,000 videos produced 549 million public views and 330 million Engaged views, so roughly 60% of public views qualified as engaged in its sample and the average public-to-engaged ratio was about 1.67x. Agentio also reports substantial variation: smaller channels showed larger gaps than larger ones, technology content had a lower engaged-view share than several other categories, and feed surfaces generated a disproportionate share of the difference. YouTube still says the public-view change does not alter creator earnings or YPP eligibility.

Why it matters

Teams now have concrete evidence that the August 24 rule change can create large apparent growth in headline views without equivalent growth in continued watching. That makes pre/post-cutover public-view comparisons, sponsorship CPM calculations and view-based conversion rates particularly vulnerable to false improvement. The size of the gap also appears to vary enough that a single universal adjustment factor would be unsafe; creators and marketers need their own Engaged-view baselines rather than assuming all channels experienced the same uplift.

One public-view definition now spans all formats

A public view counts when playback begins from the first frame for Shorts, long-form videos, podcasts and live streams. The prior definition remains available as `Engaged views`, creating separate exposure and continuation metrics.

Early data shows a large aggregate gap

Agentio says its post-cutover analysis covers more than 75,000 videos and 549 million public views. Those videos recorded 330 million Engaged views, or about 60% of the public total. Put differently, public views were roughly 1.67 times Engaged views across the measured sample.

The uplift is not uniform

Agentio reports that channels below 50,000 public views showed roughly 85% more public than Engaged views in its sample, while channels above 300,000 public views showed a smaller gap of about 49%. Technology content had an engaged-view rate of about 46%, also illustrating that category mix can materially alter the apparent uplift.

Feed distribution appears to create much of the discontinuity

In Agentio’s dataset, feed surfaces accounted for about 38% of public views but only around 20% converted into Engaged views. The company says feed traffic represented roughly 77% of the aggregate gap between public and Engaged counts, consistent with a first-frame metric capturing more lightweight exposure.

Monetization still did not move with the public counter

YouTube says the counting change does not affect earnings or YPP eligibility. Public views therefore should not be treated as a direct economic metric merely because they are the most visible number.

What to watch next

  • Whether YouTube publishes its own aggregate data on the post-August 24 uplift.
  • Independent datasets that test whether Agentio’s measured ratios hold across broader creator populations.
  • Whether third-party analytics and influencer-marketplace products make Engaged views the default continuity metric.
  • How sponsors and agencies rewrite CPM and guarantee language around the new public-view definition.
  • Whether YouTube exposes Engaged views more broadly through APIs and exports.

Still unclear

  • Agentio’s dataset is large but comes from a creator-marketing platform and may not be representative of YouTube as a whole.
  • The measured uplift varies materially by channel size, content category and traffic source, so aggregate ratios should not be generalized to individual channels.
  • YouTube has not published a typical expected uplift in public views.
  • The practical availability of Engaged views in every third-party reporting workflow remains uneven.
