What changed
On August 27, 2026, Microsoft Advertising announced that AI Max is available to all advertisers in standard Search campaigns. The optional suite combines Search term matching, Text customization and Final URL expansion. Microsoft says the new Search campaign creation flow enables AI Max by default, although advertisers can turn it off or selectively disable individual capabilities. The platform also exposes AI-optimized labels, asset reporting and landing-page reporting, while existing negatives, budgets, targeting and brand controls continue to apply.
Why it matters
This changes the default operating assumption for new Microsoft Search campaigns. A campaign can now move beyond the advertiser’s explicit keyword list, generate additional ad messaging from existing assets and website content, and route users to a different eligible landing page without the advertiser configuring each expansion manually. The controls remain reversible, but agencies and SaaS teams need to audit query matching, generated copy and destination behavior as first-class campaign outputs rather than assuming a new Search campaign is purely manual unless automation is explicitly added.
AI Max expands three parts of the Search campaign at once
Search term matching uses keywords, ads, landing pages and contextual signals to find relevant searches beyond the supplied keyword list, including conversational and AI-driven queries. Text customization generates additional messaging variations from existing assets and website content. Final URL expansion can select a more relevant landing page from the advertiser’s site when Microsoft predicts it better matches the user’s intent.
The important rollout change is the default
Microsoft describes AI Max as optional, but the new Search campaign creation flow starts with it enabled. Advertisers can turn the suite off or disable individual features, so this is not a mandatory conversion of every account. It does mean campaign-review checklists should verify the setting explicitly rather than relying on historical assumptions about what a newly created Search campaign will do.
Microsoft is adding visibility around the automation
AI Max includes reporting intended to show where automation is contributing, including labels for AI-optimized traffic, asset-level reporting and landing-page reporting. Negative keywords, brand controls, budgets and other campaign settings continue to constrain delivery. The useful governance pattern is therefore not blanket rejection or acceptance of automation, but measuring the incremental query, creative and destination behavior it introduces.
Vendor tests show upside, but not a universal result
Microsoft says 44 advertiser experiments produced a spend-weighted conversion uplift of about 13.6%, with ten tests reaching statistically significant positive results. Those are vendor-reported tests rather than an independent benchmark, and individual outcomes will depend on conversion quality, site structure, brand constraints and how much incremental search demand exists.
Google Import can carry the automation across platforms
Microsoft says Google Import can bring corresponding AI Max settings into Microsoft Advertising and scheduled imports can continue inheriting them. Teams that operate both Google and Microsoft Search should therefore review import mappings and not assume an automation setting remains isolated to the platform where it was first configured.
